1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice; was there anything memorable about it?
When I was in the 7th grade, I moved from a suburb of Chicago to Connecticut. When I lived in Chicago, I really enjoyed competing in the town sailing program. When I moved out east, there weren't the same opportunities for public sailing. I decided to try rowing because I thought it'd be like sailing. All boating sports have to be pretty similar, right? Turns out I was very wrong!
2. Was there a practice, race or other event when you fell in love with the sport, or when you knew you might not be too bad at rowing? When you thought you could make the national team?
The first race where I really started to understand the appeal of rowing on a high level was the Jr. B single at the 2006 Club Nationals. I was drawn to the challenge and drama of the multi-day slugfest regatta format. I was thrilled to finish 5th. From then on, I knew I had the guts and drive it would take to become a great sculler. I also knew small boat sculling was where I wanted to make my mark.
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice?
My worst race was the quarterfinal of the Lightweight Men's Single of the 2014 World Championship. 500 meters in, I clipped a buoy, lost my oar, and immediately flipped. My best race was the C final of that same World Championship. I set a personal record and a world record (that was unfortunately broken several hours later in the A final). It felt good to make the best out of a bad break.
4. Best/Anything you've done in the sport no one knows about?
Most people don't know that I actually started out in the single because I wasn't good enough to make the freshman "A" quad. That time to develop on my own ended up being critical to my development.
5. Any/Most important advice for young rowers?
Be the best at being coached. The ability to effectively harness constructive criticism is a huge advantage over time.
